The principal city of Trentino is located 30 km from the Residence Cielo Aperto, in the valley at the foot of Monte Bondone.
Founded by the Celtic populations, it was taken by the Romans and named "Tridentum". In 1004 the Emperor Henry II transferred the power to the episcopal principality. Despite several popular revolts, the power of the bishops was maintained until the arrival of the Napoleonic troops in 1796. The subsequent Austro-Hungarian domination carried out various infrastructural works such as the regulation of the Adige river and the construction of the Brenner railway line, interventions that allowed for give a strong acceleration to the modern development of the city.

With its marvelous frescoes and crenellated towers, the Buonconsiglio Castle is the most important castle in Trentino. For centuries the seat of the bishop princes, today it houses the provincial art and archeology collections.
